rvi put 1209. godine u povelji kralja Andrije, a ime Marija Bistrica pojavljuje se u 18. st. vezujući se uz otkriće čudesnog kipa Majke Božje. Župska crkva koja je do tada bila posvećena Sv. Petru i Pavlu nakon otkrića u istom stoljeću posvećuje se Blaženoj Djevici Mariji. Feudalni posjed Bistrica imao je više vlasnika od kojih su najpoznatiji: ban Slavonije Dionizije, Nikola Ludbreški, ban Ivan Čus, braća Bradač, Ivan Horvat, Mihael Konjski, porodica Kerečenji, Juraj pl. Malenić, grof Petar Keglević, grof Baltazar Patačić, grofovi Drašković, grof Petar Sermage i na kraju barun Lazar Hellenbach. Ukinućem kmetstva 1848. godine Marija Bistrica postaje kotar u okviru Zelinske podžupanije.

Bistrička crkva i župni dvor oduvijek su bili okupljalište hrvatskih rodoljuba pa je upravo u župnom dvoru donesena odluka o osnivanju Matice ilirske koja je prerasla u Maticu hrvatsku. U Mariji Bistrici je Vatroslav Lisinski skladao prvu hrvatsku operu ‘Ljubav i zloba’, a tu nastaje i budnica ‘Prosto zrakom ptica leti’.

Župa Marija Bistrica se prvi puta spominje 1334. godine. Marija Bistrica je poznata kao Marijansko proštenište i to od 18. st. kada je otkriven kip Majke Božje uz koji se vezuju veliki broj čudesnih događanja koja su priznata tek poslije pomnih ispitivanja.

Hrvatski sabor 1715. godine podiže zavjetni oltar, a 1731. godine biskup Branjug posvećuje novu crkvu i mijenja ime naselja u Marija Bistrica. Današnji izgled crkveni kompleks dobiva 1883. godine nakon velike obnove po, projektu arhitekta Bauera Bollea, a na uređenju rade najpoznatiji hrvatski umjetnici. ” Papa Pio Xl.dodijelio je1923. godine svetištu naslov Male bazilike (basilica minor). Zlatne krune daruju 1935. godine nadbiskup Bauer i Stepinac u ime hrvatskog naroda. Biskupska konferencija ustanovljuje 1971. god. Mariju Bistricu kao nacionalno svetište i određuje 13. srpnja blagdanom majke Božje Bistričke. Na proslavu tristogodišnjice svetišta i 1300-tu godišnjicu pokrštenja Hrvata 9. rujna 1984. godine okupilo se na Nacionalnom euharistijskom kongresu 400.000 vjernika. Najsvečaniji dan je 3. listopad 1998. kada papa Ivan Pavao II. posjećuje Mariju Bistricu povodom proglašenja pokojnog kardinala Alojzije Stepinca blaženim.
